Primary 1 is an exciting and important year where children begin their journey into school life. At this stage, we focus on helping children feel happy, safe and confident as they settle into their new environment.
Learning in Primary 1 is fun, play-based and child-centred. Through structured and unstructured play (in a variety of settings) and practical activities, children develop early literacy and numeracy skills while also building independence, thinking skills, confidence and positive relationships. Beginning to read and write are exciting milestones for children in Primary 1. The foundational skills of this are taught in a strategic and systematic way. This includes progression through reading schemes and the learning and application of phonics. Understanding of number and maths skills develops throughout the Primary 1 year as does the familiarisation and use of ICT.
We place great emphasis on learning through exploration, talk and hands-on experiences, both indoors and outdoors. Children are encouraged to be curious, creative and resilient learners, developing social and emotional skills and promoting a love of learning that will support them throughout their time at school.
Strong partnerships with parents and carers are central to our approach, as we work as a team to ensure each child is loved, supported and valued as they take this important first step in their education.
