Primary 2 is a positive and engaging year where children continue to develop confidence, independence and enthusiasm for learning. Building on the foundations established in Primary 1, pupils are supported as they further develop the key skills and capabilities they need to succeed in their learning.
In Literacy and Numeracy, children continue to develop their talking and listening, reading and writing skills, as well as their understanding of number, measure and problem-solving. Learning experiences are active and purposeful, providing regular opportunities to practise and apply skills in meaningful contexts. We aim to foster a love of language, books and numbers through engaging and practical learning.
Through The World Around Us, pupils explore a range of topics that help them develop an understanding of themselves, others and the world in which they live. Our Primary 2 topics include All About Me, People Who Help Us, The Arctic, Space, and Safety at the Seaside. These topics encourage curiosity, questioning and exploration, while supporting the development of thinking skills and personal awareness.
Children also have opportunities to express themselves and develop creativity through The Arts, including art, music and drama. Physical Education and outdoor learning play an important role in promoting physical development, cooperation and confidence.
Primary 2 is a key stage for developing Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PDMU). Pupils learn the importance of working together, showing respect and kindness towards others, and beginning to take responsibility for their own actions and learning.
Above all, our aim in Primary 2 is to create a happy, safe and supportive learning environment where every child feels valued and encouraged to achieve their full potential. We want children to enjoy learning, feel proud of their achievements, and develop a positive attitude that will support them throughout their learning journey.
