Language and Literacy is an Area of Learning in the curriculum. It focuses on developing children’s language and literacy skills. These enable children to interact effectively in the world around them, express themselves creatively and communicate confidently. We teach our pupils Language and Literacy through the skills of
These skills are essential for thinking, learning and interacting in personal, social and work contexts throughout life. Literacy is key to learning and also to enjoyment and personal growth.
Talking and Listening
We recognise that children talk and listen first. We encourage our youngest pupils to talk and listen with purpose and confidence. As they journey through the school children are encouraged to talk about their feelings, thoughtsand ideas as well as their academic learning.
Reading
We wish for every child to become a competent reader. From high quality phonics teaching to reading a first novel, reading takes prime of place within our Literacy provision. We have invested heavily in reading resources for all pupils no matter what their ability so there really is a book for everyone! We have two libraries in school and a huge range of topic books also.
In Primary 1 parents are invited to become ‘Mystery Readers’ which is a magical moment in the Primary 1 classroom!
Pupils in Primary 4 – Primary 7 have the opportunity to engage with our Accelerated Reader Programme and are rewarded for great progress in Assemblies.
We also celebrate World Book Day, have buddy reading and have had various authors visit our school.
Writing
The development of writing has been a target on our School Development Plan and as a school we are building little writers who understand writing for purpose, form and enjoyment. This progresses well throughout our school and is often connected to class novels or classroom topics.
