Mathematics and Numeracy gives children a wider understanding of how the world around them works and prepares them for making decisions, solving problems and processing everyday information.
Through Numeracy we enable children to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in:
All of these are connected, but Processes in Mathematics are at the heart of all Mathematics and Numeracy learning. These processes focus on how children learn rather than on the content that they cover.
Across the curriculum, at a level appropriate to their ability, children are enabled to:
choose the appropriate materials, equipment and mathematics to use in a particular situation;
use mathematical knowledge and concepts accurately;
work systematically and check their work;
use mathematics to solve problems and make decisions;
develop methods and strategies, including mental mathematics;
explore ideas, make and test predictions and think creatively;
identify and collect information;
read, interpret, organise and present information in mathematical formats;
use mathematical understanding and language to ask and answer questions, talk about and discuss ideas and explain ways of working;
develop financial capability; and
use ICT to solve problems and/or present their work.
We regularly celebrate Maths Week and through the use of Matheletics we are developing mental maths which is then celebrated in Assemblies. We also take our learning of Numeracy outdoors to make it as real-life for children as possible.
We know that for some children Maths can be scary but our wish is to help every child discover an area of Numeracy that they can enjoy and see real purpose in!
