Physical Education

Physical Education focuses on children’s physical development, health and wellbeing. Our pupils are provided with at least two hours of curricular Physical Education each week based on the following elements:

  • Athletics (the basis of running, jumping and throwing)
  • Dance (many activities can be linked to music and drama)
  • Games (sending, receiving and travelling)
  • Gymnastics (simple control and movement)
  • Swimming (in Primary 5, Primary 6 and Primary 7)

We aim to make Physical Education fun and enjoyable where children can achieve though a variety of progressively challenging and innovative activities. We teach children to understand and appreciate the benefits of physical activity and the relationship between physical activity and good health.

As well as class lesson we offer After-schools clubs and have very successful football and hockey teams.

We are also supported throughout the year by many external agencies and have the opportunity to attend many events.

Our Sports week in May/June is a highlight in the school year for many children and parents.

At Carrickfergus Model we are extremely well-resourced for PE lessons, lunch time in the playground and on the school field. Our school field is a brilliant space for moving, playing and sport. It is a hidden gym at the back of our school that we are proud and protective of.
